Doorhandles, designing, playing, holding, imagining.
Throughout the making process I really struggled to correlate Gretchen’s use of Semi-Circles and her use of freehand painting as the shapes are so neat and modern, yet the abstract paintings are so disorderly and abstract. Up until now I had been focusing on the freely-painted aspect of her work as opposed to the neater, modern look which she also creates. While reconsidering my wallpaper, and pondering over the feedback, I decided I wanted to change the direction I was heading in, and will now be creating a more configured forms.
I will be also trying to keep my designs simple and allow the colours to remain the focal point of the space. I want to keep bold colours involved as I previously have, but I am hoping with this more modern style it will allow the colours to pop more than they did in my previous designs.
After considering the use of simple forms yet bold colours in my apartment space, I decided that I would want my fixtures and built in elements to be reasonably simple in colour, as to not take away from the surrounding spaces, but to compliment them in form, and finish.
Designing my final door-handle was a really enjoyable task for me. Gretchen Albrecht’s work can be very polished when she uses the hemispherical shapes. I knew that I wanted to create something either circular or hemispherical to represent her use of this shape and I thought that If I created a semicircle, it can be used on both doors and inward facing cupboards, where both halves of the circle are able to meet and make a whole.
I decided to use a brass finish on my handle as I think it looks really nice against all colours, and has a sense of slight reflective quality to it. I have designed my door-📷 handle as a circular shape however the connection to the wall is square, and gently curves in to a circle as it reaches the face of the design. There are also linear indents in the final design, I created these as I think they make the design less simple and also will create different tones in the brass where the indents shadow.
