This week we partook in a clay moulding workshop, where we were instructed to design and make our own tiles. Focusing on the shape and texture this week, I took inspiration from a few of my earlier designed tiles.

Firstly I created a blue and white circle inspired tile, as shown digitally rendered below.

I began with this design in my first tiles sketches, and the idea that there are 5 or so designs which are gathered together in no particular pattern. However this design could be used In a random assortment of mismatching tiles, or could be strategically places to create imperfect circles at meeting points of 4 tiles.📷

📷In my above tile rendition, I had in mind the abstract design I first considered, where each tile is randomly placed so can look individual, hence why the pattern on this tile is shifted one of the half circles away from the corner and on to an edge, and doesn’t look as neat. However after consideration of the design and digitally rendering the pattern repeat, I think that looks more effective and focuses on the colour and textural elements. I chose the bold blue against the white as Gretchen Albrecht uses large scale bold colour against a plain (gallery) backdrop.
