Designing a space is realised through careful consideration of the location, the publics and the intended function of the space. In order to gauge the location in it's entirety, I place myself in the location in particularly relevant conditions. Allowing myself to observe the public and how they use the site at present.

Often I will also consider the way certain elements and the environment affects the space, by way of collecting recordings, photographs, sound clips, and material samples.

In the fronting space of the St Paul's Street Gallery, sunlight reaches the ground for a large portion of the day in good weather, particularly either side of midday. As I inhabited the space, I began to realise how uplifting the sunlight can feel and the warmth it can provide a space.

I recorded imagery and video of the way the sun expressed itself within the space as well as the wind's temperament and decided that I didn't want my pavilion to create so much shade that the site loses this radiant element. In saying this, Summer-time does require some form of shelter, which is why my new design will propose silk draped structures, so that they are moveable and can provide shade from most angles across the day, while also allowing airflow through the adaptable features in the frames.
