My exhibition at the domain wintergardens showcases the a series which explores tactile connections between surfaces. My project investigates the meeting and intersections of certain materials (natural and artificial) and their interactions with one another during this threshold moment. I aim to exhibit a harsh contrast between the two colliding objects as a metaphor for their inspired natural elements, to bring awareness to moments of repossession by nature, where the natural and synthetic worlds are at odds with one another. I have taken influence from subtle gestures; a raindrop falling onto concrete, plants growing in the cracks of paving, ice fall in the ocean. With the current state of our environment and a decline in the health of our natural world these designs aim to introduce a unique way of raising awareness through art and incorporating this into every day awareness through the practicality of the furniture pieces.
I am proposing a small selection of these intended household furniture items, which have been critically designed to simulate these interactions between nature and the world. I have experimented with and explored the uses and forms of concrete and glass combined, and found the contrast between the two surfaces and weights intriguing and visually engaging in relation to the natural world.
Each furniture piece is tactile and textures, my earlier work with sequencing resulted in an admiration for the way textures were so alluring, and provocative tactility becomes within a space or experience, especially in gardens where the ability to touch is limited. In the fernery there are specifically signs requesting not to touch the plants, so by introducing an element to the space that encourages sensory activation.
These pieces are exhibited at the gardens in a showroom format, on a raised, minimalistically dressed space, as well as being artificially lit to create a modern, fabricated layout to present these modular designs. I chose to create this deceptive space to juxtapose the winter gardens, as these staged spaces couldn't be more unique from the surrounding fernery, this also reinforces the narrative of the harsh collisions and contrasts I am trying to demonstrate.
