Vibrant, full, high Intensity colour absorbing space, in a cascading array of ‘Prismatic Chroma’.

Gretchen Albrecht’s signature use of animated colour, frequently takes form of disciplined, diluted paint strokes. These horizontal ribbons of rainbow have drooping elements to them, blurring the liquids where they meet, obscuring the original colours and creating a bleed of overlayed primary colours. Her work is notably large and pronounced. The work she creates is based on natural elements and landscapes.

In my design process, I have mimicked her style through the use of colour and horizontal paint strokes, my design is informed by her more vibrant pieces and I have chosen to produce an array of colours within a wallpaper design. Featuring reds, yellow, oranges, green, teal, purples and pinks, majority of these colours are high intensity, saturated tones. This design displays on a white background for ultimate emphasis on the colour within the space. I have explored the movement and flow of colour within my iterative model making exercise through a multitude of materials, and discovered that my most engaging models and drawings featured an intense and joyous colour scheme. I have chosen to place my wallpaper feature along the north-east facing wall in front of the stairwell and large windows. This wall reflects a lot of sunlight from midday to evening and I wanted the vibrancy of the colours to glow and be experienced in overwhelming quantity.

This transitional space carries people between two zones, and I feel that the concept of placing my design in a transitional space speaks to Gretchen Albrechts narrative, as her paintings are based on transitional skies and changing landscapes. The scale of my design and lack of a pattern repeat was informed by the abstract composition and large scale of her most popular works, where smaller aspects or pattern are rarely seen. I intend for the wallpaper to create energy and immersement into the space, and feel that it creates an inspiring threshold within an artist residence. Moving forward I would like the apartment to follow this bold energetic state with vibrant colours and the use of paint strokes and abstract narratives in a large scale.
