Colour Blocking: Generally means to take opposing colours from the colour wheel which creates a bold palette that makes either colour pop.

In this week exercise we were told to take a deríve around the city block. From this we were to pick up on certain colour palettes commonly used and how they were used, we also were looking for different quantities, texture, depth, intensities and finishes that these colours were used in.

After roaming near AUT and the surrounding areas, I found that blues were often a key colour, not only through paint and physical colouring of materials but the city often glowed blue due to the amount of glass and reflective surfaces or water featuring around the city which reflecting blue from the sky or had a tint.

So I chose to focus on this and consider common colours which were found around the city and specifically AUT. AUT features a lot of oranges and yellows in their architecture around campus, I also found yellow to be quite a prominent colour in the city because of the road markings and felt that yellow represented a city perfectly because a city known for "No Parking" marks as it's so busy. The front of the campus on Wellesley Street has a large concreted space which has a lot of faded paint markings across it, blues and greens are spread across the seal and it's impossible to make out what it is supposed to be, but I found it intriguing how I walk over this worn out colour every day yet never noticed it before.

In my collage I kept it very geometric to follow suit of the city environment, i used the wooden cubes as a representation of the gridded environment the city is and the wood was inspired by the new AUT buildings. Paint was a common feature in my collage as I wanted to show the blurring of colours and how they bleed in to eachother in reflective surfaces. I also used transparency for the base and an acrylic element to show the amount of glass used in the city and as a means of reflecting its environments colour the way reflective architecture seems to.
