Abstract Wallpaper Design

Creating a wallpaper or window covering based on Gretchen Albrecht’s work was rather difficult as she tends to have a few different styles, but a similar colour palette.

Her colours are very easy to incorporate in to my own work as she always uses many and boldly. Her colours are often primary and very vivid and have a rainbow effect because of their abundance. In creating these designs I tried to use many colours and attempt to represent her methods in my ideas.

Four out of these 6 design iterations have a pattern repeat or the ability to be repeated. I liked the idea of creating a pattern repeat as it can then be adapted to any living space and wall. However Gretchen Albrecht’s work is all large scale and I abstract, and I feel that a smaller scale design which is repeated doesn’t fit her bold style. These four designs are also the least vibrant, I think the colour scheme in the orange wallpaper design is best suited to her’s but I am still not happy with the small scale of design.

My favourites and the design I will continue with from now on are the middle two, with the bright colour paint strokes, I feel like this works vertically or horizontally. The bottom design has incorporated linear elements which are often found in Gretchen’s paintings. However I feel that the top one is nice and simple also like her work, so I will continue to develop ideas in relation to these two in order to produce a final.
